Kerala Proposes Mass Sterilisation of Bonnet Macaques to Curb Human-Wildlife Conflict
The Kerala Forest Department is planning to seek permission from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change for the mass sterilisation of Bonnet macaques, a primate species endemic to South India. This initiative is part of the 'Mission Bonnet macaque,' a 10-point programme aimed at reducing human-wildlife conflicts. Farmers and residents near forest areas have reported significant crop damage caused by these monkeys, including coconuts and other agricultural produce. The Kerala Forest Department also plans to implement waste management programmes in eco-tourism centres to discourage feeding of the animals by visitors.
