Supreme Court Affirms Legislature's Authority to Enact Laws Without Contempt of Court
The Supreme Court of India, in a significant ruling, clarified that the enactment of laws by Parliament or State legislatures cannot be considered as contempt of court. The judgment was delivered by a Bench comprising Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Satish Chandra Sharma, while disposing of a 2012 contempt petition filed by sociologist Nandini Sundar and others. The petition accused the Chhattisgarh government of failing to comply with the Supreme Court's 2011 directives to disband vigilante groups like Salwa Judum and disarm tribals designated as Special Police Officers (SPOs). Instead, the state government passed the Chhattisgarh Auxiliary Armed Police Force Act, 2011, which legitimized the SPOs. The Court emphasized the doctrine of separation of powers, stating that legislatures have the authority to enact or amend laws, and any challenge to their validity must be pursued through legal remedies. The ruling underscored the need for coordinated efforts by the Chhattisgarh and Central governments to restore peace and rehabilitation in areas affected by Maoist violence.
LDF Protests Against Venugopal’s Remarks on Kerala’s Social Security Pension
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) organized a protest march in Nilambur on June 3, 2024, against All India Congress Committee general secretary K.C. Venugopal for his alleged derogatory remarks about the social security pension scheme implemented by the LDF government in Kerala. Jamaat-e-Islami Condemns Violence and Demolitions Targeting Muslims
The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, a prominent Muslim organization, has strongly condemned recent incidents of violence against Muslims, particularly highlighting the Aligarh case where four Muslim men were accused of transporting beef and brutally assaulted by a mob. Despite the meat being later confirmed as not beef, cases were registered against both the attackers and victims under the Cow Slaughter Act, which the Jamaat termed as a miscarriage of justice. The organization pointed out a disturbing pattern of mob lynchings and hate crimes against Muslims, Dalits, and other marginalized groups in recent years, often under the pretext of cow protection or love jihad. The Jamaat also criticized the illegal and inhumane demolition of Muslim properties, homes, and educational institutions, especially in Uttar Pradesh, where madrasas with valid registrations were sealed or demolished without due process. The organization reiterated its demand for strict enforcement of anti-lynching provisions and urged the government to uphold the rule of law, ensure the safety of minorities, and restore public faith in justice.
Telangana High Court Overturns Gag Order Against Media Houses
The Telangana High Court overturned a gag order issued by a local court against several media houses, including newspapers, TV channels, and web portals. The local court had directed these media organizations to refrain from publishing defamatory content against Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) and its management. A bench comprising Justices T. Vinod Kumar and P. Sree Sudha ruled that the trial court’s ad-interim ex-parte injunction order was 'unreasoned' and violated the Civil Procedure Code. The High Court emphasized that gag orders must not infringe upon fundamental rights, such as freedom of speech and expression, which can only be restricted under Article 19(2) of the Indian Constitution. The court also noted that the trial court failed to issue notices to the opposite parties, record reasons for the order, or specify a time frame for respondents to challenge it. Additionally, the High Court observed that MEIL had filed similar suits in another court, which amounted to an abuse of the legal process. The gag order was deemed unsustainable due to its non-compliance with established legal principles.

Sruthi J.S. Releases Feminist Poetry Collection 'Vagina Dialogues' in Thiruvananthapuram
Vagina Dialogues, a collection of poems authored by Sruthi J.S., Joint Commissioner of the Central Tax and Central Excise Commissionerate in Thiruvananthapuram, was recently released. The book launch event was presided over by Mini Sukumar, a member of the Kerala State Planning Board, and was received by Dr. Manu Remakant, Head of the Department of English at S.N. College, Chempazhanthy. During the event, Ms. Sukumar emphasized the influence of the feminist performance text, The Vagina Monologues, on the themes and structure of the book. Dr. Remakant discussed the tone of the collection and its political context, particularly its feminist themes.

C.R. Prasad Appointed Officiating Vice-Chancellor of Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University
On Tuesday, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar issued orders appointing C.R. Prasad, a senior Professor and Head of the Department of Kerala Studies at Kerala University, as the officiating Vice-Chancellor (V-C) of Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University. This appointment follows the retirement of the former Vice-Chancellor (in-charge), L. Sushama. The State government had earlier submitted a panel of three nominees for the selection of the new Vice-Chancellor. C.R. Prasad’s appointment marks a significant step in the leadership transition of the university, which focuses on promoting Malayalam language and culture.

Revised Anganwadi Menu Introduced with Protein-Rich Dishes
The Women and Child Development Department has introduced a revised menu for anganwadi centers in the state, following a child's preference for biryani and chicken fry over traditional dishes like upma. The new 'model food menu' was unveiled by Minister Veena George during the state-level anganwadi Praveshanolsavam event in Pathanamthitta. The updated menu, which includes egg biryani, ragi ada, and other protein-rich dishes, aims to meet nutritional requirements while reducing sugar and salt intake. This marks the first time a uniform menu has been implemented across all anganwadi centers in the state. The menu now includes milk and eggs three times a week, up from two, and specifies the ingredients and their nutritional values for each dish. The initiative was inspired by a viral video of a child's meal preferences shared on social media, prompting the minister to advocate for a more appealing and nutritious anganwadi menu.

Uttar Pradesh Approves 20% Reservation for Ex-Agniveers in Police Recruitment
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, on June 3, 2025, approved a proposal to provide 20% horizontal reservation for former Agniveers in police recruitment. This reservation will apply to direct recruitment for positions such as Police Constable, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), Mounted Constable, and Fireman. The decision aims to ensure meaningful post-service employment opportunities for Agniveers who complete their four-year tenure under the Agneepath scheme. The reservation will be applicable across all categories—General, SC, ST, and OBC—within their respective groups. Additionally, former Agniveers will be eligible for a three-year age relaxation when applying for these posts. The first batch of recruitments under this policy is expected to begin in 2026, coinciding with the return of the first batch of Agniveers. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had previously announced in July 2024 that the state government would prioritize the adjustment of Agniveers in police services and PAC. The Agneepath scheme, introduced by the Union government, allows youth to serve in the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy for four years as Agniveers.

SCCL CMD N. Balram Forms Committee to Address Losses in Mining Projects, Pushes for New Mine Permissions
N. Balram, Chairman and Managing Director of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), emphasized the urgent need for General Managers to expedite the acquisition of mandatory permissions, particularly forest clearances, for new mines. During a 10-hour review meeting at SCCL’s headquarters in Kothagudem, Bhadradri Kothagudem district, Balram discussed expansion plans, strategies to enhance coal production, and workforce safety with General Managers from the company’s 12 operational areas. He highlighted the uncertain future of coal belt areas like Yellandu, Manuguru, and Bellampalli without new mines and stressed the importance of proactive efforts to secure permissions. Balram also announced the formation of a special committee to address losses in the Shanthikhani and Adriyala Longwall Projects, emphasizing the optimal use of heavy machinery to boost productivity. Additionally, he reviewed coal production at the Naini coal mine in Odisha and suggested exploring the establishment of a coal washery in Sathupalli, Khammam district.
CCB Conducts Major Anti-Drug Operations in Bengaluru, Seizes Narcotics Worth Over ₹60 Lakh
The Anti Narcotics Wing of the Central Crime Branch (CCB) in Bengaluru recently conducted multiple raids targeting drug peddlers, seizing narcotics worth over ₹60 lakh. In one operation, officials raided an apartment and apprehended two individuals, recovering 1.2 kg of marijuana and 220 grams of hydro ganja valued at ₹13 lakh. The accused, both BBA graduates from Kerala employed in a private firm, confessed to sourcing drugs from a contact in Kerala and selling them to customers. In a separate raid, CCB officials confiscated tobacco, nicotine products, pan masala, and gutka packets worth ₹61.8 lakh from a godown in Thalaghattapura, Kanakapura Road. Additionally, the Banasawadi police seized items worth ₹70,000, including e-cigarettes and flavoured hukkah products, from a shop in HRBR Layout. The shopkeeper is currently absconding, and efforts are underway to locate him.
Kodagu Power Infrastructure Severely Damaged by Rains; Restoration Efforts Underway
Heavy rains and strong winds in Kodagu have caused significant damage to the power infrastructure, including 1,442 electricity poles, 11 transformers, and 13.105 km of power lines. The Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) is actively working on restoration efforts, having already repaired or replaced 1,091 poles and nine transformers. Despite the adverse weather, around 100 poles are being replaced daily. To expedite the process, the Madikeri division of CESC has deployed 231 personnel, along with 52 staff from other divisions, 75 outsourced workers, and 124 contract workers. However, continuous rain and gusty winds are hampering progress and causing further damage. A dedicated toll-free helpline (1800-599-0061) has been set up for consumers to report power-related issues. The executive engineer has assured the public that every effort is being made to restore power supply as soon as possible.
