Kerala and Tamil Nadu to Collaborate on Legal Strategies Against NEP and PM-SHRI Funding Dispute
Kerala’s Minister for General Education, V. Sivankutty, has announced that preliminary discussions have been held with the Tamil Nadu government regarding shared concerns over the National Education Policy (NEP). The discussions, conducted over the phone with Tamil Nadu’s Minister for School Education, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, were initiated on the directions of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. A meeting is planned in two weeks to develop joint legal and policy strategies to safeguard States’ rights in the education sector. Kerala is also seeking legal recourse against the Union government’s decision to withhold ₹1,500.27 crore under various Centrally sponsored education schemes, including PM-SHRI. The Union government is withholding these funds to pressure Kerala into signing the agreement for implementing PM-SHRI, which aims to develop schools showcasing the NEP. Kerala has communicated its concerns about the NEP to the Union government, including during a recent meeting with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Despite this, the Union government has not reconsidered its stance. The Supreme Court’s recent verdict, which states that no State can be compelled to adopt the NEP, has further strengthened Kerala’s position as it explores legal options against the Union government’s decision.
