VCK Emphasizes Ideological Commitment Amid Electoral Success Celebrations
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), a political party recognized by the Election Commission of India, has organized a series of 'victory celebrations' and public rallies to emphasize the significance of its recent achievements. These events, held in Villupuram, Tiruvannamali, and Chennai, were attended by prominent leaders including VCK President Thol. Thirumavalavan and General Secretary D. Ravikumar, as well as DMK Ministers M.R.K. Panneerselvam and S.S. Sivasankar. The latest rally is scheduled for May 6 in Chidambaram. Promotion Dispute Sparks Chaos at Kerala University Syndicate Meeting
A special Syndicate meeting at Kerala University (KU) on Monday turned chaotic due to a heated dispute over the promotion of Syndicate member S. Nazeeb, who is also the general secretary of the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA). The controversy arose when Dr. Nazeeb, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kerala Studies, sought to have his 18-month contract service at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit counted as ‘past service’ for promotion to Associate Professor under the Career Advancement Scheme. The Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) Mohanan Kunnummal had earlier refused to implement the promotion, citing non-compliance with University Grants Commission (UGC) norms. The matter was referred to the Governor, who issued a show-cause notice. While Dr. Nazeeb approached the Kerala High Court, the court directed the Governor to resolve the issue. During the meeting, CPI(M)-backed Syndicate members rejected the Governor’s objections and insisted on upholding the Syndicate’s decision, leading to a face-off with the Vice-Chancellor. BJP-backed members opposed the move, arguing it violated UGC guidelines. The meeting ended without a resolution.
Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Appeals to Employee Unions Amid Financial Crisis
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy addressed employee unions threatening to strike over wage demands, urging them to consider the state's precarious financial situation inherited from the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government. He highlighted the ₹7,000 crore monthly expenditure on salaries, pensions, and schemes, along with ₹8,500 crore in unpaid retirement benefits and sectoral arrears. Reddy criticized the BRS for borrowing at 11% interest and leaving unpaid coal bills for Singareni Collieries. Despite these challenges, the Congress government transferred ₹30,000 crore directly to farmers’ accounts in 16 months. Reddy emphasized unity between the government and employees, warning against destabilizing actions by opposition parties. He invited union leaders to discuss grievances before escalating tensions.

Study Highlights Lion-Tailed Macaque's Habitat Adaptation in Silent Valley National Park
A recent study conducted by the Bengaluru-based Centre for Wildlife Studies (CWS) has revealed how the endangered lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus) strategically adapts its habitat use in response to increasing human pressures. The study, titled ‘Highs and lows of arboreal life: Space use and movement strategies of lion-tailed macaques (Macaca silenus) in the Western Ghats of India,’ was carried out in the Silent Valley National Park, a key conservation area for the species. The research, led by Sikha Hariharan, a Doctoral Fellow at CWS, focused on the spatial ecology and movement patterns of two macaque troops in areas with varying levels of human presence. Using GPS tracking, vertical space use assessment, and advanced movement modeling, the study found that macaques in the buffer zone maintained smaller home ranges and spent 94.2% of their time in the mid-level forest canopy, avoiding the forest floor due to ecological risks and human disturbances. In contrast, macaques in the core zone exhibited greater use of the forest floor and larger home ranges, demonstrating ecological flexibility not previously observed in this species. The study emphasizes the importance of continuous canopy connectivity and three-dimensional space use in wildlife conservation planning.

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced a massive investment of ₹2 lakh crore for the development of national highways in Telangana over the next four years. Over the past decade, the Centre has constructed 2,600 km of new national highways in Telangana, doubling the pre-2014 length of 2,500 km, with an expenditure of ₹1.25 lakh crore. Kumbichal Kadavu Bridge Completed Under KIIFB Funding to Transform Tribal Connectivity in Amboori
The Kumbichal Kadavu bridge, a long-awaited infrastructure project in Amboori, Thiruvananthapuram, has been completed at a cost of ₹24.71 crore, funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). This bridge will significantly improve connectivity for over 1,450 tribal families residing in 11 settlements at Thodumala, who previously relied on country boats for daily needs and medical emergencies. The bridge’s completion is expected to facilitate the introduction of bus services to the area and reduce travel time for school buses, which currently take a circuitous route through Tamil Nadu. Additionally, 16 new roads are under construction on the hilly terrain across the bridge. The project has also raised concerns about the livelihoods of two boat operators who will lose their daily earnings, prompting the Amboori grama panchayat to explore alternative employment options for them. The bridge’s inauguration is pending the Chief Minister’s approval of a suitable date.

Fire at Kozhikode MCH Prompts Patient Evacuation and Safety Concerns
A fire broke out on the sixth floor of the PMSSY block at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) in Kozhikode, leading to the evacuation of patients. This incident occurred on Monday afternoon, just days after a similar fire on May 2, which had caused the evacuation of 151 patients due to a minor explosion in the UPS room of the MRI scanning unit. The latest fire, which originated near an operating theatre, prompted the evacuation of patients from the second to fifth floors using wheelchairs and stretchers. The fire was brought under control within two hours. Authorities have raised concerns about the hasty readmission of patients without adequate safety measures following the May 2 incident. Health Minister Veena Mahesh has ordered a comprehensive fire audit of the building and acknowledged the lapses in safety protocols. A committee has been formed to investigate the recurring fire incidents and ensure the building's technical safety.
Karnataka HC Rules Separate Cheque Dishonour Cases Cannot Be Combined
The Karnataka High Court ruled that two separate complaints of cheque dishonour cannot be tried together solely because the accused is the same. The court emphasized that each case must be evaluated independently, as the circumstances and evidence differ. The decision came in response to a petition challenging a magistrate's refusal to combine two separate cases into a single trial. The court clarified that the accused cannot seek the benefit of Sections 219 or 220 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in such scenarios. The ruling highlights the importance of treating each case on its own merits, even if the accused is common.
