BJP Accuses Karnataka Govt of Using Caste Census for Divisive Politics
BJP State unit president B.Y. Vijayendra accused the Congress-led Karnataka government of adopting a 'divide and rule' policy through an unscientific caste census during a rally in Nippani on Tuesday. He claimed the Siddaramaiah government is using the caste census to divide society, particularly targeting Hindus and Muslims, to divert attention from issues like rising prices. Vijayendra also criticized the Congress for attempting to consolidate support among Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and OBCs by releasing such reports, questioning the urgency behind accepting the census report. He further highlighted that the State lacks the authority to conduct a caste census. The rally, 'Bhima Hejje,' commemorated the centenary of B.R. Ambedkar's visit to Nippani in 1925.
Omar Abdullah Distances from NC MLAs’ Adjournment Motion on Waqf Act in J&K Assembly

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on April 15, 2025, distanced himself from the adjournment motion filed by his party MLAs regarding the Waqf Act in the J&K Assembly. Abdullah clarified that adjournment motions are meant for government-related issues, while the Waqf Act, passed by the Indian Parliament, should have been addressed through a different procedural route. The motion was submitted by National Conference (NC) MLAs led by Tanvir Sadiq, but Speaker Rahim Rather disallowed the discussion, citing the matter as sub judice. Opposition MLAs from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and J&K Peoples Conference (JKPC) joined the demand for a joint resolution on the issue, leading to a three-day deadlock in the Assembly. JKPC leader Lone criticized the NC for procedural errors and accused the government of orchestrating the disruption to avoid condemning the Waqf Act. PDP leader Iltija Mufti questioned the NC’s silence on the issue, suggesting a tacit understanding with the BJP. The controversy highlights tensions over the Waqf Act’s implications for J&K’s Muslim-majority population.
Maharashtra Minister Chandrakant Patil Assures Natural Disagreements in Mahayuti Coalition

On April 15, 2025, Maharashtra Minister and BJP leader Chandrakant Patil addressed rumors of discord within the ruling Mahayuti alliance, emphasizing that disagreements are natural in a coalition government comprising leaders from diverse political backgrounds. The Mahayuti alliance, consisting of the BJP, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction, secured a decisive victory in the December 2024 Assembly polls. However, speculations arose after Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reportedly raised concerns with Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding Ajit Pawar, the NCP faction leader in the government. Patil likened the situation to differences among family members and stated that such friction is a sign of a healthy, functioning coalition. He highlighted the distinct political ideologies of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his deputies, Eknath Shinde (Shiv Sena) and Ajit Pawar (NCP), as the root of these disagreements. Additionally, the Shiv Sena expressed displeasure over Fadnavis reversing certain decisions made during Shinde’s tenure as Chief Minister from June 2022 to December 2024. Despite these tensions, the alliance continues to govern Maharashtra.

ED Seeks to Intervene in CBI Case Against K.N. Nehru’s Brother
The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on Tuesday sought to intervene in a plea filed by N. Ravichandran, brother of Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru and promoter of True Value Homes (TVH), to quash a charge sheet filed against him by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in an alleged bank fraud case. The ED, represented by Special Public Prosecutor N. Ramesh, argued that it had conducted an independent probe into money laundering based on the CBI’s case and wanted to present its findings to assist the court. Ravichandran’s legal team, led by senior counsels N.R. Elango and Vikram Choudhary, opposed the ED’s intervention, stating that the agency had no legal standing in the case. They also accused the ED of acting under political influence. The court granted time till June 12 for the ED to file its petition and extended an interim stay on further proceedings until then. The case involves allegations of cheating Indian Overseas Bank of ₹30 crore, though Ravichandran has since repaid ₹51.26 crore, settling the loan.

He urged organizations like the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) to seek legal recourse through the Supreme Court rather than expressing dissent on the streets. Sarma emphasized that the matter is already under judicial review, and any grievances should be addressed in court to avoid public conflict. He highlighted the importance of maintaining communal harmony in Assam and preventing clashes between opposing groups. Earlier, the police had detained numerous protesters in central and western Assam who were en route to Guwahati for an AAMSU-organized rally against the amended Act. Additionally, a protest in Silchar turned violent when demonstrators clashed with security personnel.

The special court has already taken cognizance of the complaint, noting a prima facie case against the accused. Veena, along with her defunct IT firm Exalogic, is alleged to have fraudulently received ₹2.7 crore from CMRL, which the company claims was for consultancy services. Bajwa appeared before the police for investigation in the matter, with Congress alleging the FIR was politically motivated. Delhi High Court Denies Bail to Separatist Leader Nayeem Ahmad Khan in Terror-Funding Case
The Delhi High Court, on April 9, denied bail to separatist leader Nayeem Ahmad Khan, who was arrested in 2017 in connection with a terror-funding case linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba leader Hafiz Saeed. The court emphasized that prolonged incarceration cannot be a basis for granting bail in cases involving terrorist activities aimed at destabilizing the nation. Khan, a leader of the Hurriyat Conference, was arrested on July 24, 2017, and has been in judicial custody since. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) accused him and others of conspiring to incite violence and propagate secessionist agendas in the Kashmir Valley under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The ED investigated 15 premises, including Khachariyawas’s house, with the assistance of the Central Reserve Police Force. The investigation stems from a money laundering probe initiated after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a case in 2015 against Pearl Agro Corporation Limited (PACL) and its promoter Nirmal Singh Bhangoo for defrauding investors. The ED alleges that proceeds from the scam were diverted to entities linked to Khachariyawas. Indian Airlines Face $80 Million Tax Liability Over Aircraft Leases
Indian tax authorities have issued tax bills totaling $80 million (approximately ₹685 crore) to multiple airlines for leasing aircraft, with 85% of the liability linked to IndiGo, according to a report by global aviation advisory firm Ishka. The tax audits reclassified operating leases as finance leases, subjecting lessors to a 10% income tax. The audit covers leases across airlines, including Air India and smaller carriers. IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, has operating lease agreements with major lessors such as Avolon, Aviation Capital Group, AerCap, BOC Aviation, Carlyle Aviation Partners, and SMBC Aviation Capital. Recently, IndiGo received a ₹944.20 crore penalty order from the Income Tax Department for the 2021-22 assessment year, which it plans to challenge legally. The Ishka report highlights concerns that such tax liabilities could deter lessors from engaging with Indian airlines. Experts describe the move as unprecedented, with no prior instances of such large-scale challenges to cross-border aircraft leases. The report also suggests that Gujarat International Financial Tec (GIFT) City could offer tax solutions, but some industry executives view the notices as a tactic to encourage lessors to operate from GIFT City.

AP Government's New Minor Mineral Policy to Revive 2,000 Mining Units and Benefit 2 Lakh Workers
The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has finalized a new Minor Mineral Policy, which is expected to revive around 2,000 mining units that had ceased operations. This policy will benefit over 200,000 workers employed in the sector and provide stability to the mining industry. The Federation of Minor Mineral Industry (FEMMI) has welcomed the policy, stating that it will enhance the sector's contribution to the State's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Key features of the policy include clearing pending applications in the mines department, implementing a one-time settlement for past violations with minimal penalties, and eliminating additional fees for the transfer of lease agreements between family members in case of a leaseholder's death. The policy also introduces tonnage-based seigniorage, rationalizes premium amounts, and offers the option for installment payments to support entrepreneurs. Additionally, the government will sanction mining leases on a first-cum-first-serve basis for road metal, gravel, and building stone, while reserving the auction system for minerals like silicon, sand, quartz, and dolomite. This move is expected to attract new investors and entrepreneurs to the sector.
