Human-Leopard Coexistence in Mysuru: Challenges and Conservation Efforts
Mysuru, a prominent tourist destination, is known for its proximity to tiger reserves and elephant sanctuaries like Bandipur and Nagarahole. However, the city has recently gained attention due to frequent leopard sightings in its industrial and residential areas. Leopards have long been part of Mysuru’s landscape, but unchecked urbanisation has led to increased human-leopard encounters. Notable incidents include leopards entering the Infosys campus and the Reserve Bank of India’s currency note printing unit, prompting forest department interventions. The Leopard Task Force, established in January 2023, has captured and translocated nearly 150 leopards in two years, with 122 captured in Mysuru district alone. Experts highlight the need for habitat conservation and conflict mitigation strategies, such as early warning systems and garbage management, to promote coexistence. A proposal for a 92-acre enclosure at Yelwal to house leopards is under consideration, though experts advocate for preserving wilderness and securing wildlife corridors instead.
