YSRCP Leaders Accuse Ruling Alliance of Vendetta Politics Amid Illegal Mining Case

Former MLAs of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), Mekapati Vikram Reddy and Ramireddy Prathap Reddy, have accused the ruling alliance government of engaging in vendetta politics. They allege that a fabricated mining case has been filed against Kakani Govardhan Reddy, former Minister and YSRCP Nellore district president, as part of a deliberate attempt to harass him. According to the police, six teams have been formed to search for Kakani, who is accused in an illegal quartz mining case, with operations spanning Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru. On Wednesday, the High Court dismissed the bail petition filed by Kakani's legal team. During a media conference on Thursday, Vikram Reddy claimed that the alliance government is targeting YSRCP leaders with false cases to divert attention from its unfulfilled election promises. He also referenced Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu's alleged opposition to YSRCP leaders. Pratap Reddy further alleged that the coalition government is disrupting law and order in the state through factional politics, including illegal mining, belt shops, and gambling. Both leaders expressed confidence that the public will reject the alliance government in the upcoming simultaneous elections in 2027-28 and vowed to support Kakani Govardhan Reddy.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has challenged Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to dissolve the State Assembly and seek a fresh mandate if he is confident about his government’s performance. BJP legislature party leader A. Maheshwar Reddy, addressing a press conference on Thursday, suggested that the Chief Minister should at least seek re-election from the Kodangal Assembly constituency, where he lost during the Parliament elections. Reddy criticized the Chief Minister for his remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Congress Party conclave in Ahmedabad, accusing him of attempting to save his position and gain favor with Rahul Gandhi. The BJP leader also accused Reddy of mortgaging Telangana’s self-respect to Gandhi and criticized the Congress government’s failure to implement its six guarantees and other promises. Additionally, BJP chief spokesperson N.V. Subash highlighted the party’s electoral successes in the 2023 Assembly and recent Lok Sabha and MLC elections, claiming that the Congress is losing ground while the BJP is gaining momentum.

Congress Credits UPA for Tahawwur Rana’s Extradition, Criticizes Modi Government

The Congress party criticized the Narendra Modi-led government for claiming credit for the extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Congress leaders, including former Home Minister P. Chidambaram, emphasized that the extradition was the result of sustained diplomatic, legal, and intelligence efforts initiated by the previous UPA government in close cooperation with the United States. The process began in 2009 when the National Investigation Agency (NIA) registered a case against Rana and others involved in the 26/11 conspiracy. Despite legal setbacks, including Rana’s acquittal in 2011 by a U.S. court, the UPA government persisted through institutional diplomacy and mutual legal cooperation frameworks like the MLAT (Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty). The UPA government also secured crucial evidence from the U.S., which led to the issuance of non-bailable warrants and Interpol Red notices. The extradition process continued even after the change of government in 2014, with Rana’s release date set for 2023 after serving his sentence in the U.S. Congress highlighted that the Modi government merely benefited from the groundwork laid by the UPA.

A fresh FIR was filed at Mangalagiri Rural Police Station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act. Karnataka High Court Directs State to Penalize Officials Failing to Enforce SC/ST Land Protection Act

The Karnataka High Court has directed the State government to establish rules to penalize officials who fail to enforce the Karnataka Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prohibition of Transfer of Certain Lands) Act, 1978. A Division Bench comprising Justice V. Kameswar Rao and Justice T.M. Nadaf highlighted the persistent shortcomings in initiating action when lands granted to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) are unlawfully transferred. The Bench upheld a 2022 verdict by a single judge, which overturned a 2009 decision by the Special Deputy Commissioner, Bengaluru, regarding the restoration of land granted to an SC individual in 1981-82. The court noted that while the sale deed was executed in 1996 without prior permission under the PTCL Act, it was legally registered in 1998 after obtaining permission. The Bench criticized the slow response of officials, despite the suo-moto powers granted under the Act, and emphasized the need for proactive implementation to protect the interests of socially and economically disadvantaged groups. The PTCL Act was enacted to address the exploitation of SCs/STs by affluent sections through illegal land transfers, either for nominal or no consideration.

On April 10, 2025, Pakistan distanced itself from Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a co-conspirator in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, who was extradited to India from the United States. During a press briefing, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan stated that Rana had not attempted to renew his Pakistani citizenship in over two decades and emphasized that he is a Canadian citizen. Rana, born in Pakistan, attended the Pakistani military academy in Hassan Abdal, Punjab, where he befriended David Headley, a Lashkar-e-Taiba operative involved in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) accused Rana of plotting the attacks with Headley and assisting with visa logistics, linking him to “Major Iqbal,” another suspect. Karnataka Cabinet to Discuss Caste Census Report Amid Opposition from Vokkaliga and Lingayat Communities

The Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes conducted a socio-economic and educational survey (caste census) between 2015 and 2016, which has recently resurfaced in discussions following its submission to the government in 2024. The decision to bring the matter to the Cabinet was reportedly influenced by Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, during the Ahmedabad Congress session. Both communities, represented by the Rajya Vokkaligara Sangha and Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha, have criticized the survey as 'unscientific' and have demanded a re-survey. The post of chairman of the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes remains vacant since K. Jayaprakash Hegde stepped down after submitting the report. The government is considering forming a sub-committee or commission to review the findings and provide recommendations.
