Palaniswami Accuses CM Stalin of Delaying Caste Census in Tamil Nadu

Former Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami criticized Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for his reluctance to conduct a caste census in Tamil Nadu. Speaking to journalists in Omalur, Palaniswami highlighted that during the AIADMK's tenure (2016-21), a one-man commission was established to collect quantifiable data on castes, communities, and tribes, and a Government Order (G.O.) was issued. However, the DMK government, which came to power in 2021, did not extend the commission's tenure. Palaniswami accused the Chief Minister of delaying the census and showing little interest in the issue. He also criticized the DMK government's handling of law and order, corruption, and other administrative failures. Additionally, Palaniswami clarified that the AIADMK had not stopped the earned leave (EL) surrender system during its regime, attributing the issue to COVID-19-related school closures. He also denied rumors of BJP pressuring the AIADMK to reinstate expelled leaders like V.K. Sasikala and reiterated the party's stance on alliances for the 2026 Assembly elections.

DMK MP P. Wilson Urges Increase in Income Limit for Post and Pre-Matric Scholarships

DMK Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson has called on the Union Government to raise the annual family income limit for Post-Matric and Pre-Matric Scholarships from the current Rs. 2.5 lakh to Rs. 8 lakh. He highlighted that this income limit has remained unchanged since 2013, despite rising education costs and inflation. Wilson emphasized that the income limit was initially set at Rs. 2 lakh in 2010, with guidelines mandating revisions every two years based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). However, no significant updates have been made since 2013. He also noted that the Union Government recently increased the income ceiling for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category to Rs. 8 lakh, and similar adjustments were made for schemes like the National Overseas Scholarship and the Top-Class Education Scheme for SC/ST students. Wilson argued that failing to extend this revision to Post-Matric and Pre-Matric Scholarships excludes many deserving students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Citing the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) Report, he pointed out that the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of SC and ST students continues to lag significantly behind the general population. Wilson urged the government to address this gap by increasing the income ceiling for these scholarships.

Five years after the closure of Vijayamohini Mills in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, employees are demanding its reopening and the provision of pending benefits, including unpaid wages. The mill, one of the 23 spinning mills under the National Textile Corporation (NTC), has been closed since 2020, leaving hundreds of workers in financial distress. Despite a brief reopening in 2021, the mill shut down again after 45 days, without recalling temporary staff. As of January 2025, various government departments in Karnataka owe electricity supply companies (escoms) a staggering ₹8,690.19 crore in arrears, according to recent data from the Energy Department. The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) is owed the highest amount of ₹4,541.21 crore, followed by the Hubli Electricity Supply Company (Hescom) with ₹1,505.17 crore. Other escoms, including Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company (Gescom), Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company (Cesc), Mangaluru Electricity Supply Company (Mescom), and Hukkeri Rural Electric Cooperative Society, are owed ₹1,316.42 crore, ₹764.22 crore, ₹542.01 crore, and ₹21.16 crore, respectively. Notably, Bescom's outstanding dues decreased by ₹2,299 crore between March 2024 and January 2025. Energy Minister K.J. George disclosed that as of October 31, 2024, Bescom was owed ₹2,095.74 crore by public drinking water units and streetlight systems. Due to persistent non-payment, escoms have initiated power disconnections to defaulting government departments, excluding essential services like hospitals, schools, police stations, courts, and drinking water units. Letters have been sent to government departments urging them to clear dues promptly. Experts warn that Karnataka's power sector, already facing losses of ₹39,000 crore across escoms (except Mescom), risks further collapse unless arrears are recovered swiftly.

The case was filed by Deepak Patil, former president of Chandori Gram Panchayat in Aurad taluk, who alleged that Mr. Chavan had created fake documents and encroached upon 3.19 acres of government land in Kolara (B) village of Bidar taluk. The complaint also implicated the Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner, Tahsildar, and Additional Director of Land Records, accusing them of cooperating with Mr. Chavan in the land grab. APCC Leader Calls for Postponement of Delimitation to Protect Southern States' Representation

Kolanukonda Shivaji, the vice-president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), has urged the Central government to postpone the delimitation process, which involves redrawing electoral boundaries based on population. He argued that this process would disproportionately benefit states with higher population growth, particularly in the North, while diminishing the political representation of southern states. Shivaji highlighted that southern states, which have successfully implemented population control measures, would face a significant reduction in their share of Lok Sabha seats. Currently, the South holds 129 out of 543 seats (24%), while the North holds 172 (32%) and the Hindi belt holds 205 (38%). If the number of seats is increased to 888, the Hindi belt would gain 324 seats (39%), while the South would only gain 164 seats, resulting in a 19% decrease in their representation. Shivaji referred to a Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting chaired by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, which addressed the issue of equitable representation for southern states. He reiterated the demand for the Centre to conduct the census first and delay the delimitation exercise to ensure fair political representation.

Jairam Ramesh Urges Vaishnaw to Halt Amendment Threatening RTI Act

On March 23, 2025, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh urged Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, to halt an amendment that threatens the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005. The amendment, enacted through the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, removes the provision that grants citizens equal access to information as legislators. Ramesh emphasized that this change eliminates Section 8(1)(j) of the RTI Act, which allowed citizens to request personal information from public authorities if there was a public interest. Over 30 civil society organizations have raised concerns about the amendment, which is yet to be notified as the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules are still in draft form. Vaishnaw defended the amendment, citing the Supreme Court's 2017 judgment on privacy, but activists argue that the RTI Act already balanced privacy and transparency. Ramesh urged the minister to pause, review, and repeal Section 44(3) of the Data Protection Act to preserve the RTI Act's integrity.

Muslim Organisations Boycott Nitish Kumar’s Iftar Over Waqf Amendment Bill Support

On March 23, 2025, major Muslim organisations in Bihar boycotted Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Iftar feast, held at his official residence, 1 Anne Marg in Patna. The boycott was a protest against the Janata Dal (United) party’s support for the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill. Seven prominent Muslim organisations, including the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Imarat-e-Sharia, and Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, expressed their dissent in a letter to Mr. Kumar. They accused him of violating his promises of secular governance and protecting minority rights by aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and supporting the Bill. The organisations argued that the Bill, if implemented, would adversely affect centuries-old waqf properties, including educational institutions, hospitals, and religious places, exacerbating poverty and deprivation among Muslims, as highlighted in the Sachar Committee report. Despite the boycott, the Iftar party was attended by several Muslim community members, including Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, and other Cabinet colleagues. Bihar Sunni Waqf Board Chairman Irshadullah criticized the boycott, stating that it was not in line with Islamic teachings and that politics should not be mixed with Iftar. Mr. Kumar has been hosting the Iftar party annually since becoming Chief Minister.
